Hornisgrinde Black Forest View: sunrise photography forecast

Hornisgrinde opens the Black Forest into a broader landscape of wooded ridges, the Rhine plain and distant Vosges. It offers a different picture from nearby Mummelsee: work with layers and changing light rather than expecting a lake reflection.

Light corridor: blocked

Why: Thick cloud along the sun's path is likely to stop the low light.

  • Light path: blocked (100% blocking cloud at the ray's height)
  • Sun: likely hidden. Low cloud fills the horizon (100%); the sun will probably stay behind it.

For photographers: shooting Hornisgrinde Black Forest View

Best months

May to October for a straightforward walking visit, with autumn useful for atmosphere and colour. Snow, ice and strong wind can change the character of the approach outside that period.

Suggested focal lengths

24–70 mm for moorland and the wider panorama; 70–200 mm for compressed ridges and distant light.

Composition

Use the authorised paths and boardwalks to bring moorland textures into the foreground. For the distant view, simplify the frame around a few overlapping ridges rather than including every feature of the plateau.

Recommended arrival

Be on the plateau 45–60 minutes before sunset. Add time for the uphill walk from Mummelsee and carry a headlamp for the return.

Access planning

Follow the signed pedestrian route above Mummelsee and keep to the protected moorland paths. Tower and restaurant opening hours are separate from access to outdoor paths; do not make the tower your only composition.

Parking: Designated Mummelsee visitor parking; the access road to the summit is not a public driving shortcut.

Approach: The published direct route from Mummelsee to the lookout tower is about 1.5 km each way with roughly 125 m ascent; allow more time with equipment.
