Mummelsee Lakeshore: sunset photography forecast

Mummelsee is a compact Black Forest lake beside the High Road, with dark trees reflected in the water. Calm conditions give the cleanest pictures; a thin veil of mist can add atmosphere, while stronger wind quickly breaks the reflection into texture.

Light corridor: blocked

Why: Rain near you is likely to block the light.

  • Light path: blocked (79% blocking cloud at the ray's height)
  • Sun: likely hidden. Thick low cloud toward the horizon (97%) will likely block the sun.
  • Cloud: thick cloud between you and the low sun (98%); no real golden hour expected.
  • Rain: likely near you, which blocks most direct light

For photographers: shooting Mummelsee Lakeshore

Best months

May to June for fresh green and October for autumn detail around the shore. Winter can offer snow and ice, but an open road does not mean the lakeside path is free of ice.

Suggested focal lengths

16–35 mm for the shore and reflected treeline; 50–100 mm for quieter patterns in water, reeds and forest.

Composition

Walk the permitted lakeside route before committing to the first open view. Use a small part of the shore to anchor the frame and avoid filling the picture with blank sky above a dark reflection.

Recommended arrival

Aim for 30–45 minutes before sunrise if the approach is safe. The lake can also work under soft cloud when a colourful sunrise does not develop.

Access planning

The lake sits on the Schwarzwaldhochstraße and has a circular walking route. Check road and path conditions, stay on the shore path and keep winter photography off the lake ice.

Parking: Use the designated visitor parking at Mummelsee and follow signs rather than stopping on the B500 roadside.

Approach: A short walk from the visitor area to the shore; the full lakeside circuit is roughly 800 metres.
