Steingletscher, Susten Pass: sunrise photography forecast

The glacier lake below the Steingletscher is the strongest composition on the Susten Pass: meltwater, bare rock and ice within one frame. The pass road is the whole story for access — it is usually shut from November into June, and the drive is full of places that will tempt you to stop.

Why: The sun's path is clear at the height its low light travels, so the light can reach the clouds at sunrise.

  • Light path: clear (13% blocking cloud at the ray's height)
  • Sun: clearly visible. You're above the low cloud (2050 m); the sun clears the deck below you.
